Common questions

Where does this data come from?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) free public vPIC database — the same source used by most VIN decoding tools. It's a US government database, not a paid third-party service.

Why didn't it find my vehicle?

Double-check the VIN is exactly 17 characters with no spaces or typos — VINs don't contain the letters I, O, or Q. Very old vehicles (pre-1981, before 17-character VINs became standard) or some low-volume/specialty vehicles may not be in the database.

Is my VIN stored anywhere?

No — the lookup happens directly in your browser against NHTSA's public database. Torqued doesn't log, store, or see the VINs you decode here.
