What Is a Diagnostic Fee?

A diagnostic fee is a charge for a mechanic's time spent identifying what's wrong with a vehicle, separate from the cost of the actual repair — it covers the inspection and troubleshooting work needed to figure out the problem before any fix begins.

Why shops and mobile mechanics charge for diagnosis

Figuring out what's actually wrong with a vehicle — especially for a vague symptom like a warning light, an unusual noise, or an intermittent issue — can take real time and expertise, sometimes involving specialized diagnostic equipment. A diagnostic fee compensates for that time whether or not you end up proceeding with the repair.

Is it credited toward the repair?

Many shops and mobile mechanics credit the diagnostic fee toward the cost of the repair if you move forward with the fix — so you're not paying twice. This isn't universal, though, so it's worth asking directly before the diagnosis begins.

When it's worth paying

If you don't already know exactly what's wrong, a diagnostic fee is usually a reasonable and necessary cost — guessing at repairs without a real diagnosis often costs more in the long run from replacing parts that weren't actually the problem.
